Iraqi doctor blasts American attacks

Date Posted: 2004-10-14

An Iraqi doctor studying in mainland Japan says American bullets are causing children to get cancer.

The doctor, Fusamu Sarich, 35, was speaking to Ginowan City’s listening society. A pediatrician, he told listeners the Americans’ regenerated uranium bullets cause great damage, “because of this depleted uranium, many children get sick with cancer. It’s because of aggression of Americans Iraq has big damage.”

Sarich showed pictures of children with head and leg injuries, and said 50% of Iraq’s population is children, but 5,000 are dying either from sickness or malnutrition. He also showed pictures of Bagdad’s oil minister, and asked “do you know why Americans didn’t attack this oil place? Because the Iraq war was the profitable purpose for America.”

He accused the United States of not helping the Iraqi people.

The Ginowan City group too Sarich to the high hill in their city park, overlooking an American military base. Sarich said “I believe Okinawan people feel the same as Iraq’s people. I hope Okinawans can get Americans away from Okinawa.”

Some Okinawans are questioning the accuracy of Sarich’s allegations, though. Despite few people attending the lecture, media made it seem a big event with a large article and several photographs. They question that 5,000 children had died in Iraq, noting there have been no news reports suggesting those numbers.
