Three divers rescued after drifting three miles

Date Posted: 2003-07-11

A dive instructor and two tourist divers were rescued by a 11th Maritime Safety Agency patrol boat after unexpectedly strong current had carried them away from their designated pickup spot off Aguni Island.

Officials at the 11th MSA say the three divers, a 27-year-old dive instructor from Ginowan City and two tourists from Saitama and Chiba prefectures, had gone to what is called drift dive where the divers let ocean currents freely carry them. However, the current was extraordinary strong, and the two tourists run into trouble.

After securing the safety of the two tourists, the instructor tried to signal to the boat that was scheduled to pick them up after what was supposed to be a 45-minute dive. By that time, though, the divers had drifted about five kilometers from the planned spot and the boat skipper was unable to locate them. He then called MSA for help. The patrol boat located the three about two hours later, and all were rescued unharmed.
