Missing pin identified as copter crash culprit

Date Posted: 2004-10-07

A pin missing from the tail section of a Sea Stallion helicopter caused it to lose control and crash into Okinawa International University last August.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry made the announcement, saying U.S. military investigation revealed that a bolt came off during the CH-46D flight over Ginowan City, only a few hundred yards from its home station at Futenma Marine Corps Air Station.

Three crewmen were injured in the August 13th crash, but no civilian were hurt. The helicopter made a crash landing alongside the university’s administration building, then caught fire.

The crash cause was released at a meeting with a Japanese-American Investigation panel in Tokyo.
