Super typhoon plans weekend rendezvous

Date Posted: 2004-09-03

Okinawa dodged the bullet on typhoons heading into the region in August.

Super Typhoon Songda may not play the same game. Upgraded to super status early Wednesday morning, Songda was packing winds of 130 knots, gusting to 160 knots. That translates to winds of 130 miles per hour (67 meters per second), gusting to184 miles per hour (84 meters per second).

The typhoon’s current track has it passing 125 nautical miles east of Okinawa during the weekend, with winds decreasing a little bit. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center warns that the track could shift more to the west, bringing Super Typhoon Songda even closer to Okinawa.

Now traveling at ten miles an hour, Songda could begin its approach from the southeast late Saturday afternoon.
