Gifu committee considers Ogimi elderly-visitor plan

Date Posted: 2002-01-24

Members of a committee from Yamaoka in Gifu Prefecture who are investigating extended visits to Okinawa for their elderly citizens were recently welcomed to Ogimi Village. The village has proposed a plan whereby successful applicants from Yamaoka aged 65 and older will spend one month in Ogimi during which time they will not only sightsee but will also be able to work on farms and take advantage of Okinawa’s relatively warm climate as a means of improving their health. During their six-night stay at the Ogimi community center, the committee members will help to harvest sugarcane as well as talk with village elders in order to ascertain the best way of implementing the plan. If impressions are favorable and the program seems workable, elderly residents from Yamaoka will begin to visit Ogimi starting next winter.
