Ginowan still wants use of military parking lot

Date Posted: 2004-08-27

An unused open space on the inside edge of Futenma Marine Corps Air Station used by Ginowan residents is now closed.

The area, which belongs to the Marine Corps, has been made available to local residents for parking. The area close to the Ginowan City office was closed to the public last weekend, triggering cries of harassment by irate citizens whose free parking has been denied them.

An estimated 20 cars belonging to Okinawans are trapped inside the area, which U.S. military police have sealed off. The area is usually available from 6am to 11pm for use by residents, as it can accommodate up to 500 cars. It also has several softball fields which are used by Ginowan residents.

Ginowan officials told the media they were told by the military that “there was an instruction from a higher level.” Usually, the military closes the parking area during typhoons. The area entry gate is controlled by the military.
