Ishigaki hosts Star Festival

Date Posted: 2004-08-27

On the lunar calendar, August 22nd is July 7th.

On Ishigaki Island, in Okinawa’s southern island region, the date signifies that stars Vega and Altair are having their annual meeting on the Milky Way. That means time for Tanabata, The Star Festival.

Ishigaki residents turned out all the city lights and watched the skies. The hour of darkness allowed the stars to shine, “like diamonds” according to one starwatcher. Mainland tourist visitors were impressed. “we saw the Milky Way for the first time in my life. I have never seen it in Tokyo’s sky. Tokyo’s sky is very dark and nothing of the stars can be seen.”
