Beach incidents ruin vacation fun

Date Posted: 2004-08-20

Tourists and residents are flocking to beaches in near record numbers this summer, as sweltering heat triggers the urge to be near water.

With the large numbers of people hitting the sand, it’s inevitable there will be problems. Two separate incidents last weekend sent youngsters to Okinawa hospitals.

Downtown Naha’s Naminoue Beach was site of a watercraft accident. A father and son visiting Okinawa from mainland Japan, near Nagoya, were playing on a pleasure craft, with the eight-year-old boy, Yuuita, jumping from the boat and swimming.

The fun turned to tragedy when the father put the boat engine into reverse, sending the boat backward, where the propeller struck his son. The screw caught the boy’s legs and broke them. He is hospitalized with compound fractures.

The second incident took place across the island at nearly the same time. Three young sisters were visiting Hamahiga Beach at Katsuren Town when they encountered poisonous jellyfish. The 9, 7 and two-year-old girls were playing together in the water when a jellyfish stung the youngest.

While jellyfish stings can be fatal, immediate first aid action saved the girl in this case. She was taken to a hospital, and is reportedly doing well.
