Teenagers arrested in multiple arson cases

Date Posted: 2004-08-12

The fires were suspicious, starting in cars, motorcycles, and even wooden boxes.

Urasoe Police were puzzled by the nine incidents over the past few weeks, and began combing their city for clues. They appealed for the obvious: “If you ever see any strange people around here, please let us know.”

Their efforts paid off this week, as a resident reported “Yes, I saw there was a small boy running away from near one fire place.” Subsequent surveillance of the area resulted in apprehension of a 15-year-old boy.

“Yes, I did it,” he confessed. “I was very upset about fighting with a friend and I needed to do something to calm down my mind.” The boy admitted his actions weren’t brand new, telling police “I did set fire to cars, old wooden motorcycles, and maybe more than ten cases of fire since two years ago.”

Police say they know of nine fire incidents, but the boy is denying he committed the last one. That fire, in Urasoe City’’s Contenna area, involved cardboard boxes.

Questionable circumstances surrounding fires spread to Naha, as well.

Three cases of fire were reported in recent days, but police were quick to react. Naha Police have a boy in custody in connection with the cases in their city.
