Sticky-fingered policeman nabbed for stealing drinks

Date Posted: 2004-08-12

A senior police officer investigating a series of robberies was caught stealing sports drinks from a convenience store.

The 53-year-old Okinawa Prefectural Police lieutenant admits the charges, telling arresting officers I really feel sorry. I want to apologize. He was apprehended after being observed three times pocketing drinks at an Itoman convenience store.

A security camera at the convenience store captured his actions on video. The store manager then reported the incidents to police.

According to a local newspaper, the cop was investigating a series of thefts from vending machines on his own time. He bought things to eat, like onigiri, and paid for those but put the drinks in his pocket and did not pay for them.

Police say the lieutenant was not arrested, as the value of the items he stole was insignificant. The officer said he stole the drinks on impulse, and swore that he would not repeat his offense. He also paid the shop for the drinks he had taken.

Prosecutors now have the information and reports, and will decide whether to bring a formal indictment against the policeman.
