Prime Minister to clarify Japan stance on bases

Date Posted: 2004-08-12

Japanese agencies are telling the media there’s a concerted effort by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to document the government position on realignment of U.S. bases in the country.

The ministers of State, Defense and Foreign Affairs are studying the issues, which include documents relating to maintaining the peace in Japan and the East Asia, and the issue of reducing the burden to Okinawa. The ministers will meet tomorrow for firsthand discussions.

The American government will be asked to contribute to the discussions, with the U.S. positions sought on restructuring, how to cope with burdens placed on Japanese communities by having bases located in their areas, and overall security postures for Japan.
