Military admits debris came from jet aircraft

Date Posted: 2004-08-12

A small piece of metal found several months ago in a Chatan yard is from a FA18C military aircraft.

The confirmation was made this week by a Marine Corps spokesman who visited Chatan to apologize. Lieutenant Colonel Ricardo C. Stewart told Mayor Choichi Hentona that the seven centimeter long cylinder, which weighed several hundred grams, was part of an assembly which fastens to a jet aircraft wing. He said it was improperly attached, but assured the mayor the military will work to insure that the parts are properly attached in the future.

The piece of metal was found in a residentís yard in Mihama, Chatan Town, on June 15th. Officials have not identified the base the U.S. aircraft is stationed at.

Mayor Hentona expressed concern about the incident, noting it isnít the first. He asked the military to provide more prompt attention and notification to future cases.
