Two boys drown In Okinawa pond

Date Posted: 2004-08-12

A pineapple picking outing turned to tragedy for a mainland Japan family when two young boys drowned in a reservoir.

The boys, three and five years old, had been at Higashi Village Miyagi area reservoir Monday, enjoying time with their grandmother as she worked at a pineapple field. The boys and their mother were visiting from Kamagawa Prefecture in mainland Japan, near Tokyo.

The vacation day was winding down when the accident happened. The grandmother was cleaning up and putting pineapple work tools into the car while the boys ran around the area. When she was finished, the woman couldn’t find the boys.

A cellular phone call to the mother brought her to the scene, where she searched and found the boys floating in the pond. The pond, a small hand-made reservoir to provide water to the pineapple fields, was four meters long and one meter deep.

The boys were taken to an area hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
