Marines not moving to mainland Japan

Date Posted: 2004-08-05

Talk of shifting some U.S. marines from Okinawa to several mainland Japan locations have been dropped.

Strong opposition from communities near Camps Fuji and Zama is said to be the reason for the decision. The proposal had been to move some of the Marine units now based at Camps Hansen and Schwab to off-island locations to reduce the U.S. military presence here.

Plans were also dropped to shift Navy night landing activities from Atsugi Naval Base to Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
