No easy answers for new site for Futenma

Date Posted: 2004-07-22

Talks continue in San Francisco on Asia Pacific defense issues, including ideas on how to solve the Futenma issue on Okinawa.

Recognizing the likelihood that the proposed new airport at Henoko could be stonewalled, other options are being explored, including consolidating Futenma with Kadena Air Base.

Reaction to that idea was swift, and negative. Kadena Air Base is opposed, as is the leadership of Kadena Town. The Japanese government is not in favor either. From a military perspective, the argument is that co-locating the Marines facility at Kadena is strategically unfeasible because it would put too many aircraft in a single location.

Talks are also centering on relocating ground forces from Okinawa, and also from the United States to mainland Japan. There’s also a proposal to shift U.S. Navy facilities on the mainland from Atsugi to Iwakuni.
