Ginowan mayor lobbies for support in Washington

Date Posted: 2004-07-22

Ginowan mayor Yoichi Iha wants the Futenma Marine Corps Air Station gone, and he’s pounding the pavement in Washington to drum up support.

Iha’s been in Washington more than a week, and has met with state and defense department officials, as well as many members of Congress, including California’s Senator Diane Feinstein.

He met several days ago with Michael Oharon, a Senior Fellow with the Brookings Institute, a well known defense issues think tank. Oharon’s been involved with the Okinawa troops reduction issue, and earlier this year shared views during an international symposium. He advocates changes, but reminds people that “the forward deployment requirements for U.S. forces will not change.”

Iha reports some successes, saying “we got a response” to his appeals.
