Court sentences taxi driver murderer to life in prison

Date Posted: 2004-07-22

A 64-year-old taxi driver was murdered the day after Christmas 2003, only months away from his planned retirement.

The killer, Kenji Oba, 25, was convicted this week and sent to prison for life. Oba, a homeless man from mainland Japan, took the taxi that fateful evening, telling the driver to take him to the Shuri-Kinjo area.

There, he used a knife stolen from a Kumoji shop earlier in the evening to stab the taxi driver to death. I didnt want to be homeless, he told police. I just needed money to go home. I miss my parents, my hometown, but I dont have money to buy the ticket and go back home.
