New beach hotel towers over Chatan

Date Posted: 2004-07-22

It’s the tallest building in Okinawa, and it opened for business this past week. The Beach Tower of Okinawa Hotel is in Chatan, situated in Mihama near Sunset Beach.

Towering 24 stories, it overlooks American Village, Jusco, the baseball stadium where this week’s Okinawa championship series was held, and the beach. The new hotel is 81.73 meters tall, which puts it in a class all its own on Okinawa, where the typical “tall” building is 12 stories high.

Being the tallest means some logistical circumstances in the event of an emergency, and the hotel management, the Chatan Town government and the U.S. Marine Corps have already teamed up to make sure they’ve plans ready to use. The municipality and the military have a mutual aid pact, where one will come to the assistance of the other in an emergency.

The hotel is in the Chatan Nirai Fire Station area, but Nirai has no ladder truck capable of reaching the upper floors of a building. The Marine Corps, which has many high rise apartment buildings on its bases, has the necessary equipment. And they’re willing to share.

The military’s ladder truck reaches the 13th floor, and hotel management says they’ve emergency procedures to get guests to those lower floors for evacuation in event of an emergency. The hotel has special elevators for firefighters, and the military truck reaches 44 meters up, more than half the height of Okinawa’s tallest building.
