Beach a hit during current heat wave

The mercuryís sizzling, temperatures are in the 90ís, and the weekend is coming. Time to hit the beach. Not just any beach though. Oura Wan Beach at Camp Schwab on the islandís northeast side, is the place to be this weekend. Making the trek north is often seen as troublesome and time consuming by many, but this weekendís events make the drive well worthwhile.

The Marine Corps Community Services is going all out to make its annual Beach Splash a headlines-making event, and itís free. The fun begins at noon Saturday, and runs until 7pm, and then does it all over again on Sunday.

While Camp Schwab is primarily a single GIís base 363 days a year, Beach Splash is a family activity, with fun and games planned for all ages to play and enjoy. Of course, MCCS has a good many events only for military personnel too, and everyone else gets to sit around and enjoy.

Does the word FREE help get your attention?

It should, because itís key in this weekendís beach party. Free banana boat rides will be given both Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4pm. Equally exciting are opportunities for visitors to rent kayaks, sailboats and water tricycles for the nominal sum ofÖfree.

Water sports and athletic events are scheduled for throughout the day, and although advance registration is complete, itís possible for guests to sign up on impulse at the Oura Wan Beach Splash. A highlight of sports events is the aquathon, a five-kilometer road race teamed with a 750 meters swim. Interested? Be there Sunday at 8:45am.

The ever-popular beach volleyball will be on hand, with three-person teams competing in tournament action. And, for the muscle-bound set, join the bench press competition. It happens Saturday afternoon, with participant briefing at 2:45pm.

Lots of food and game booths will also be scattered around the beach site, and there will be live entertainment and DJís in action both days.

A popular feature of MCCS events of late is the opportunity for attendees to register for a chance to win free round trip air flights to Hawaii. That drawing is courtesy of Omega Travel and United Airlines.

Event organizers are anticipating a great weekend, and have only a few pearls of wisdom for folks heading to Camp Schwab. No glass pets or glass containers are allowed, and healthy dollops of suntan lotion are recommended. The weather prognosticators are predicting a bright sunny weekend, with only a few spotty clouds in the sky.

Getting There

From military bases, take the Expressway north toward Nago. Exit at Ginoza Interchange, turn right and follow signs to Highway 329. Travel north on 329 to Camp Schwab. For those looking for a scenic journey (and have patience with kids anxious to get to the beach), take highway 329 all the way to Camp Schwab.
