Talks under way on shifting Marines north to mainland

Date Posted: 2004-07-16

Talks are gearing up in San Francisco on the touchy issue of moving U.S. forces from present bases in Okinawa to locations on the Japanese mainland.

Primary talks take place today and Friday at the vice ministerial level, when Ministry of Foreign Affairs North American Affairs Bureau Chief Yasumasa Nagamine meets U.S. Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary Lawless.

Talks are expected to center around totally restructuring U.S. forces in Japan, including the shifting of some Marine Corps elements from Okinawa to Camp Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture, and the I Corps Army division from Washington state to Camp Zama near Tokyo.
