Local construction companies want more public job contracts

Date Posted: 2004-07-16

The Okinawa Prefecture Construction Work Association’s Naha Branch Chief is asking the City for more government contracts. Takeo Taira has already visited Mayor Takeshi Onaga to inquire about his member companies getting a bigger chunk of the Naha construction budget.

“Right now,” says Taira, Okinawa construction companies have a very severe life because of having no jobs. Most of the construction work goes to mainland companies, not Okinawa companies. We need more local spending and not dumping to outsiders. Jobs should be given to Okinawan companies instead of mainland companies.” He also asked the mayor to work harder to get an increased budget to facilitate local spending.

“We need jobs, and quickly,” Taira told the mayor. Onaga promised “I’ll do my best to give you jobs, because of course we want Okinawan companies to have the jobs. That’s my target.”

Onaga pledged to “cooperate with you guys together to study how to get jobs in our budget.”

Naha City Construction Operations boss Sunabe Chosei, and Urban Project Director Noriaki Oshiro said “We are trying to develop the public city apartments construction work, spreading more of the work to give jobs to the Okinawa side.” Presently, virtually all large construction jobs on Okinawa are awarded to mainland Japan firms.
