Date Posted: 2002-05-03

According to figures published by the central government, it will cost 80 billion to construct a campus for the planned Okinawa Post-Graduate University, and another 20 billion annually to run the facility. The current plan calls for the new university to open in September 2006.

Koji Omi, the minister in charge of the Okinawa Development Agency revealed the estimates at the recent meeting of the Liberal Democratic Party Okinawa Chapter.

The ambitious plan calls for a faculty with 200 professors and over 300 clerical and technical staff. The planners aim to make the university the best in the world and invite the highest caliber teachers and researchers to the faculty.

The planners had organized a meeting in the U.S. over the weekend to explain their plan to the international scientific community. Both Omi and Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine attended the meeting, which is scheduled to organize the International Advisory Committee for the project.
