Naha City to get Gorbachev Foundation office

A 21-strong group of Naha City official on a visit in Moscow announced after meeting with former Soviet Prime Minister Mikhail Gorbachov that they have agreed to establish the Japan District Headquarters of the International Gorbachev Foundation in Naha City. The delegation to Moscow is lead by Naha City Mayor Takerhi Onaga.

The Gorbachev Foundation that was established by the former prime minister after his fall from power and dissolution of the Soviet Union and is headquartered in Moscow, has district offices in the U.S. and Germany. The Japan District Office will be chaired by Tadahiro Sekimoto, a honorary director at NEC board, but all other questions including membership, office location and other details of the organization are still open.

The Japan District Office of the foundation will work closely with the Moscow Headquarters promoting international peace, development projects in developing countries, youth programs and international business projects. Gorbachev Foundation was established in 1992.
