Coral researchers gather for Okinawa symposium

Date Posted: 2004-07-01

More than 1,400 experts in the field of coral research are in Okinawa this week, exchanging information and ideas on preserving the fragile eco-structure.

The world’s coral reef research groups meet once every four years to discuss how to keep coral alive, and how to protect it. This year, experts from more than 87 countries are gathered at the Okinawa Convention Center to discuss the issues.

The goal is to “keep coral for the children”, says one official. A public symposium Wednesday focused on critical issues. The chairman of the Japanese Coral Reef Council says “I’m expecting to make coral life a promotion issue,” and encouraging participants to share their knowledge while enjoying themselves.

International Coral Reef Conference chairman Nicolas Poluunim says “we now have very special coral experts…the people of Okinawa. I hope all of you will learn the history of Okinawa and culture too.”

Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine told researchers “coral has brought up a lot of animals too, so it is very valuable organismically. I hope today’s meeting will give all he world’s people knowledge about how much coral is important to us.” Inamine stressed increased needs for protecting and preserving the coral.
