Positive step taken between Ginowan and MCAS Futenma

Date Posted: 2004-06-24

Handshakes and smiles overruled the anti-US verbage from the Ginowan mayor this week as he inked an agreement with the Marine Corps for emergency access through the base which sits in his city.

Yoichi Iha, who often complains about the base and wants it out of his city, joined with Brigadier General James Flock, Commanding General, Marine Corps Base, to close a deal allowing emergency vehicles to drive through the Marine base.

Until now, emergency vehicles going from one city of the city to the other had to go around, often adding ten minutes to the response time. The new agreement allows direct travel through the base. Flock expressed pleasure with the new deal and renewed cooperation with Ginowan City. Mayor Iha notes the agreement will save lives through the reduced travel time.

Still, Iha took the opportunity to demand return of MCAS Futenma, and says he’ll keep on seeking discussions.
