Amusement rope rider gets more action than expected

Date Posted: 2004-06-17

A teenage U.S. Marine was looking for thrills Sunday in Mihama, and he found more than he’d ever anticipated.

An amusement facility in Chatan offers bungee rope style rides, where the customer is strapped in a harness and propelled upward by the stretched rubber band. The Marine was anxious, and signed on for the ride.

As the slingshot ride upward began, one of the high-powered ropes broke, sending the serviceman on a wobbly ride. The heavy metal hook attached to the one rope struck the man in the stomach, causing injury. The other rope held, preventing more severe injury.

Police are investigating, and the facility staff says it is cooperating fully. Police want to know how the rope broke. Was it cut? They say they’ll find out soon.
