Okinawa seen as honeymoon haven for Korean newlyweds

Date Posted: 2004-06-10

A government agency is calling for a campaign to attract Korean couples to honeymoon in Okinawa.

The Ministry of Land Transport says “Okinawa should make advertisements to get tourists from Korea. Honeymooning couples to here.” It urges Okinawa officials to “try to make television commercials and movies, and make drama to get here. Okinawa beach resorts should promote strongly.”

The published report from the Ministry notes that Korea has 300,000 new couples each year, and that more than 70% of those couples travel on honeymoon trips to Guam, Thailand and the Maldives each year. “They like to go to beach resorts,” the report says, “so why not make it Okinawa? Promote. Okinawa is not yet known by Koreans.”

The Ministry of Land and Transport says advertisements are the key. “It has to make a new menu for couples, like package trips with cheap plane tickets and hotel costs set. New development is needed to get new couples.”
