Hotel Grand Mer opens, offers great rates for military

After twelve years of vacancy, Hotel Grand Mer has finally opened its doors for business! Mer was built over a decade ago but never successfully opened for business until recently. Now, the hotel is preparing to revolutionize the Okinawan hotel industry by taking a fresh, new stance. Rather than charging per guest—as is the case with most Japanese hotels—Hotel Grand Mer charges a flat-rate per room, thus prices are significantly lower at Grand Mer than at most other hotels on island.

The hotel features several great facilities such as the Oceans Café and Restaurant, Shisa Lounge and Terrace, 24-hour internet café, meeting and banquet rooms, an indoor swimming pool with children’s wading pool, a six meter deep SCUBA diving pool, and all guest rooms come equipped with internet access. In July, a new fitness center and convenience store will open as well.

Hotel Grand Mer boasts 292 rooms and 10 suites with prices ranging from ¥15,000 per night for standard rooms to ¥30,000 per night for suites. Military rates are available with prices ranging from ¥9,500 per night for standard rooms to ¥19,000 per night for suites. Rooms can sleep between four to six guests in available beds, and rollaways and cribs are also available for ¥1,000 and ¥500 per night respectively.

The hotel’s military rates should prove to be an excellent benefit to all military service members interested in partaking in the hotel’s hospitality. Military rates (per night) are as follows:

Standard Room: ¥9,500
Superior Room: ¥10,000
Deluxe Room ¥11,000
Suites ¥19,000

Hotel Grand Mer first opened its doors for business on June 1 and its official grand opening will be held on July 1. Check out time for all rooms is at 12 p.m. During June, the hotel is offering the US military community special introductory rates of ¥3,500 for standard rooms and ¥4,500 per night for superior rooms. This offer is limited to space availability, and is only redeemable for one night per guest.

“Hotel Grand Mer is a beautiful hotel with great guest amenities. By selling rooms instead of charging by the number of guest per room as is the common practice in Japan, we hope to set a new standard for Okinawa hotels by providing US military personnel and all other guests top quality accommodations at very affordable prices. We invite the US military community to come and experience the amenities and comforts found nowhere else in Okinawa City and the surrounding area,” says the hotel’s management. “We are confident everyone will enjoy the experience.”

Driving to Hotel Grand Mer is very easy. If you are coming from Kadena Air Base, exit Gate 2 and continue straight until you reach route 329. Turn right and proceed south for about 3 kilometers. Along the way you’ll pass McDonald’s on the left, A&W on the right, and OKawa’s furniture store on the left. About 100 meters after passing the furniture store, turn right and proceed up the hill for about 600 meters. The hotel will be on your left.

If you are coming from Camp Foster, turn south onto route 330 and continue until you reach route 81. Turn left on 81 and proceed east until you reach route 329. Turn left and continue about half a kilometer. Turn left up the hill and continue for another 600 meters. The hotel will be on your left.
