Nago elementary students release fish fingerlings

Date Posted: 2004-06-04

Thousands of young fish are swimming free in the Genga River in Nago today, thanks to the efforts of an elementary school class.

For the 12th time, students at Genga Elementary School and Genga Preschool in Nago joined to release Ryukyu sweetfish fingerlings into the wild. The 42 youngsters told the young fish “bring yourselvesback. Take care” as they released buckets containing 2,000 fish.

A representative for the kids group told reporters “we will save the river from the pollution. We wish all Okinawa Rivers to become clean so fish can live in them.” The youngsters sang “Genga River” during the release ceremony.
