Rescued dugong credited With attracting schools of fish

Date Posted: 2004-06-04

Yomitan fishermen are giving thanks to dugong rescued earlier this year for bringing a bumper crop of Tamam fish to the northwest Okinawa coast.

Some two tons of the fish were harvested last week, double the normal amount of the valuable fish. A Yomitan Fishermen’s Cooperative official says “this time we couldn’t fish all of them at once. It took two days.” He says the large schools of fish come only about once in ten years.

The fish went on sale at Toya Port for ¥1,000_1,2000 per kilogram, making the Taman the most highly paid fish at Mibai or Makubu. The fish is served as sashimi or as a soup.

Yomitan fishermen rescued a dugong at the site in late April, and believe he came back to bring good luck and the fish, saying thanks.
