Sumo wrestling park dedicated in Urasoe

The big guys have a new place to demonstrate their talents in Urasoe. A new sumo wrestling ring is now open at Urasoe Athletic Park, ready for the best of Japan’s wrestlers to step inside. The dedication ceremony for the 7.27 square meter ring as a week ago.

The sumo ring meets Japanese Sumo Federation standards, and was met with great enthusiasm by the local community during initial ceremonies, which featured kids sumo and musician Ozeki Musoyama from mainland Japan.

Urasoe City’s physical education chief said “we built the ring so we could hold regular sumo games. We hope Urasoe City will become known as a sumo kingdom as it is now for handball.”

The sumo ring was built with ¥24,600,000 funded by the Japanese – American Special Action Committee on Okinawa.
