Island reef rises from ocean waters

Date Posted: 2004-05-14

The question ‘what is it’ looms on the tongues of visitors to Irabu Island in Miyako-jima.

Monday the question was being asked as a strange occurrence of nature happened. It was a fog, but not the normal fog.

The weather report warned of it, saying things would be foggy

It was, to the point that the island disappeared from view; simply vanished. It was warm and humid, with temperatures at 30.2C, as the air flow was running. The heavy fog is called special for Miyako, although it’s normal in the northern prefecture of Hokkaido, near Misawa military ase.

Weather forecasters say the start of the rainy season, with the front coming across the East China Sea, brought the fog via the south winds.

Irabu islanders were very excited. “We are all family and have interest in the fog. Everybody woke up early to look at the fog. We couldn’t even see across to next door. The ocean was white color, and we couldn’t’ see at all.”
