Okinawa to host IDB seminar on immigration

Date Posted: 2004-05-14

The role of immigrants in economic development will be the topic of a special seminar during the upcoming Inter-American Development Bankconference.

The visiting president of the Inter-American Development Bank, Enrique Iglesias, said this week the bank will hold an immigration seminar in Okinawa in July.

Iglesias, speaking at a news conference in Naha, says the July 14-16 seminar, will focus on the role of immigrants in economic development, drawing on the fact that many Okinawa residents have migrated to Latin American countries.

The seminar, which will be hosted by Ginowan, will be held prior to the Washington-based bank's 2005 annual meeting, scheduled for April 10-12 in the prefecture.

Iglesias met Okinawa Gov. Keiichi Inamine before the news conference and voiced appreciation for the prefecture's preparation for the annual meeting. Inamine pledged to make the event a success.

Finance ministers and central bank chiefs from more than 40 IDB member states are expected to attend the 2005 meeting.

The IDB provides loans to Latin American and Caribbean countries.
