Restaurant & Wine Bar Hokus

Date Posted: 2004-05-06

A beautiful, relaxing space can be found at a restaurant and bar called Hokus in Kitanakagusuku Village. Specializing in California cuisine, Hokus makes good use of ingredients from around the Pacific region.

The most popular items are a combination plate with four delicious offerings. A Caesar salad and clam chowder combination is popular with the restaurant’s American clientele. The course menu is also recommended, reasonably priced at ¥2,000 and includes a main course, soup, salad, dessert and coffee or tea.

More than 80 kinds of wine from various countries are also available. The menu changes every three months, giving customers the opportunity to continually try something new. In fact, 70~80 percent of Hokus’ diners are repeat customers.

The owner, Tomonori Goeku, worked with JAL-affiliated hotels for 20 years both in Japan and overseas. He opened this restaurant three years ago after doing a four-year stint as a restaurant manager in Hawaii. The name of the restaurant, Hokus, is derived from the Hawaiian word for “star.”

The restaurant’s interior provides a relaxing atmosphere using wood, stone and greenery, complimented by colorful red, yellow and blue tablecloths, a direct reflection of the owner’s overseas experience. Goeku says the most important element in fine dining is seeing the food; the next is enjoying its aroma, and finally, tasting it.

Cost is also an important factor, he says, adding: “We want our customers to be happy with these three elements. Open the door where to where the stars welcome you and fulfill your heart and stomach”

To get to Hokus, take Highway 330 heading towards the Rycom intersection in Okinawa City. Take Route 85 in the direction of Awase Golf. Take a left at the second stoplight from the intersection, and you will see Hokus on your right. Parking is available. Reservations are recommended on the weekend. Credit cards are accepted. Call 930-3737 for information. Dinner hours: 5:30 p.m.-10:00 p.m. Bar hours: 10:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. Hokus is closed on Mondays, and the fourth Sunday of the month
