Long Golden Week holiday activity begins this weekend

Date Posted: 2004-04-29

Okinawa is moving into its longest holiday break of the year. Known as Golden Week, the official holiday period runs May 1~5, although for many, the vacation begins with todayís Japanese holiday.

For Okinawans and Japanese at large, itís considered the longest of the annual vacation periods. It may not be that long when compared to other countries, but for Japan, itís quite a long holiday season upcoming.

Okinawaís Labor Bureau says this yearís Golden Week has an average of 4-6 vacation days for the average worker. Mainland Japanís companies are giving an average of 5.6 vacation days.

Okinawan workers work harder, or canít take the holidays because they donít get paid if they donít work. Depending on classification, different production workers are allocated different numbers of holidays. Construction workers and cargo companies assign 4.7 days, production workers 4.8 days, and bankers and advertising companies 4.4 days.

The longest vacations are seven days, with commercial production companies.

This yearís Golden Week is seeing a lot of people going overseas or to mainland Japan for their vacation, while mainlanders are coming to Okinawa.

For mainland Japanese, Okinawaís a prime Golden Week vacation spot.

If youíve not made plans for Golden Week travel, donít worry about it. The commercial flights to and from Okinawa are already full, so youíll be staying on the island.
