Delays to affect Kadena visitors as construction gets under way

Date Posted: 2004-04-15

Kadena Air Base is beginning its project to enhance gates security while making the entry process friendlier for visitors.

Plans call for building new visitor centers at the principal entries to Kadena, at Gates 1 and 2. That process begins today.

Gate 1, located on Highway 58, is first to undergo construction delays and detours. One outbound lane will be closed from 6pm to 4am, starting today. An inbound lane and an outbound lane off Highway 58 will be affected beginning April 28th through May 8th. The inbound lane will close again May 10th through 20th from 6pm to 4am.

An inbound lane will be affected again, closing May 21st ~ June 4th, 6pm to 4am.

Additional changes will be affecting Gate 2 as the year progresses. Base officials are developing visitor centers that will facilitate processing of guests to Kadena, while preserving base security.
