Concert Features Renowned Japanese Classical Pianist

World-class classical entertainment is coming to Okinawa April 18th. Takeshi Kakehashi--one of Japan’s most well known classical specialists on the keyboard--will appear in concert at the Okinawa Convention Center. Doors open at 5:30pm, with the concert recital beginning at 6:00pm.

Ryukyu Asahi Broadcasting, QAB, is sponsoring the event. Orchestra level tickets are Y5,250, second tier seats are selling for Y4,200, and balcony seating is Y3,750.

Tickets are on sale at Ryubo Department Store, Mitsukoshi, Teruya Music, Tsutaya Oroku and Sound Box Mitsutome.

Takeshi KAKEHASHI, Pianist

Takeshi Kakehashi is known for the beauty and delicacy of his sound. His style of playing, which strives to combine human emotion with the sound of nature, has captured the hearts of many audiences.

Born in Hachiōji, Tokyo in 1977, Takeshi Kakehashi lost his eyesight due to cancer only one month after birth. With the encouragement of musical parents – his father is a viola player and mother a singer -- he took up piano lessons when he was four and a half years old, studying with Yaeko Sasaki, Keiko Takaoka and Mikako Abe. In 1990 he was admitted to the preliminary course of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, studying under Elisabeth Weishaar-Dvorak.

Since winning first prizes in the 1994 Ettlingen International Competition in Germany, the International Music Competition for blind and weak sighted people in the Czech Republic and second prize at the Stravinsky International Contest for young pianists in the United States in 1995, Mr. Kakeshi’s solo career has led him to the great concert halls of Europe and Asia.

In 1998 he came into the international limelight, winning second grand prize at the Concours International Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud in France and two years later in 2000 was awarded the special prize by the town of Warsaw in the International Chopin Competition, the same year seeing him perform at the G8 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit, in Miyazaki Japan.

He has also performed with the foremost Japanese orchestras – the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony and Japan Philharmonic Orchestra - Mr. Kakehashi has played with celebrated orchestras around the world including the Prague Symphony Orchestra, National Saint Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg, Dresdner Kapellsolisten.
