Herbal Summit planned for November

Date Posted: 2002-04-22

The 2002 Nation Wide Herbal Summit is scheduled to be held in Okinawa on Nov. 14 & 15. The annual summit has been held since 1992 and this marks the first time the summit will be held in Okinawa. The venues of the summit will be the Okinawa Women’s Union Center and Pacific Hotel in Naha City.

Takeshi Onaga, the Mayor of Naha City and the Chairman of the Herbal Summit Organizing Committee is pleased to have the summit here. “We are very happy and proud to have the summit here, as Okinawa is world famous for the longevity of its people, and one reason for that is our use of some unique local herbs in our cooking and medicine. This is a good opportunity for us to spread knowledge of Okinawa to the world,” Onaga said.

Up to the war, the use of western medicines was almost unheard of in Okinawa. Instead, people used various herbs in their food and medicines not only to treat ailments but also to prevent them. For example, to sure or prevent common cold, local traditions suggest mixing 500 grams of garlic, 150 milliliters of honey and 720 milliliters of awamori. Then let the concoction stay in a bottle for one year. Drink in small shots.
