Marijuana-for-awamori ring smashed by police

Date Posted: 2002-01-24

Prefectural and Gushikawa police arrested a third man on Jan. 21 in a continuing investigation into cannabis possession in Okinawa. Two men had previously been prosecuted for the same crime in November. Police had been notified that someone was smoking marijuana last October, leading to the arrest of two Yonagusuku men aged 42 and 45. The former was charged with 58 grams of cannabis possession and the latter with five grams. The most recent arrest of a 45-year-old man from Saitama Prefecture occurred when his house was searched on Jan. 14, where 8.9 grams of marijuana were found. He was identified as the supplier of the illegal substance to the two other arrestees. Police discovered that for the past eight years, the Okinawan suspects had been sending awamori to Saitama and had been receiving marijuana in return.
