Yaeyama Prosecutor Accused Of Criminal BehaviorDate Posted: 2004-03-19 Tetsuaki Akinaga went from investigator to suspect as police were interrogating him on his involvement in an injury case March 15. As police were discussing the Ishigaki case in which Tetsuaki was drinking with a man identified only as Cook, they recalled a wanted poster, and began asking questions. The 37-year-old prosecutor initially denied all connection with the case that dated back to last September, professing his innocence and saying “I am not a criminal person.” From there, it became complicated. In this week’s incident at a private hotel in Ishigaki, the argument with Cook escalated, and Cook took a knife and tried to attack Tetsuaki. Cook’s version was that he didn’t attack, but merely brandished the knife. Tetsuaki became upset at Cook, and went to the police station to swear out an arrest warrant. Cook was arrested. Police became suspicious during their conversations with the prosecutor, concerned about answers Tetsuaki was giving. They confronted him, and received denials. The allegation is that Tetsuaki beat an isakaya customer. He now says he was drinking with another group, and became upset with one of the customers, asking “what did you say about me? Who do you think I am? Be careful…talk nicely.” Police say Tetsuaki then beat the customer’s face, causing swelling. In last September’s incident at an Ishigaki izakaya, the suspect disappeared while the victim was being taken to a hospital. It turns out Tetsuaki had escaped to Osaka, then returned to Ishigaki after things quieted down. |
