Vandal attacks, damages computers at Naha Airport

Date Posted: 2004-02-19

A 46-year-old Kobe man was arrested earlier this month after he used a paper cutter to cut computer network wires at Naha Airport passenger terminal.

The police say the man has a history of mental illness. Investigators say that the man cut the wires of all JAL computer keyboards and about half of the wires of ANA computers.

Police say the man apparently hid in the building after it was closed at midnight, then cut the wires and hid again in a toilet, where he was discovered when the airport building opened for business in the morning.

The attack did not cause any significant delays in air traffic, as the affected companies had immediate access to a backup system.
