Pleasure boat sinks off Ginowan Marina, one missing

Date Posted: 2004-02-19

Two local men were rescued from a sinking pleasure boat last weekend by a 11th Maritime Safety Agency helicopter. A third person safely swam to shore, while a fourth is missing and presumed dead. A pleasure boat carrying four men on a fishing trip sank about 1.2 km off Ginowan Marina last Sunday. The boat sank about 1.2 kilometers off Ginowan Marina, while on a fishing trip.

According to MSA officials, the agency got a phone call from the boat stating that the 5.4-meter-long pleasure boat “Islander” which departed Ginowan Marina only minutes earlier had engine trouble, was taking in water and was sinking fast.

The MSA immediately dispatched a rescue helicopter to the scene some 1.2 km off Camp Kinser, but by the time the helicopter arrived, the boat had already capsized. The helicopter picked up two crewmembers while the third swam to the shore. However, rescuers were unable to find the fourth man who had been onboard, a 40-year-old Ginowan man.

MSA officials say none of the men onboard wore life vests, and apparently did not have time to put them on as the boat turned upside down within couple of minutes of the first sign of trouble.
