Forest fire at “Range 5” has Kin residents worried

Date Posted: 2004-02-12

A forest fire broke out on Range 5 live fire training area on Camp Hansen on Saturday, apparently ignited by live fire training. The Camp Hansen Fire Department had the fire under control within 30 minutes, but it flared again later same evening and was finally doused on Sunday.

Although the fire did not pose any threat to residential areas at any time, many residents expressed their worries that they might not be so lucky in the future. “Who can guarantee that there is not a big fire some day as a result of live fire training? The very least we now have to look at a blackened mountain instead of green trees and flowers that were there before,” one local resident complained.

Kin Town Mayor Tsuyoshi Gibu was not happy either. “I cannot find words what to say. Range 5 has always forest fires and I have protested the U.S. Marine Corps before. I would like to see the Range 5 removed altogether because it is such a source of worry to us,” Gibu said.
