American beef, chicken removed from Okinawa storesDate Posted: 2004-02-12 The supermarkets removed American beef from their shelves a month ago following the discovery of one case of “mad cow disease” in the U.S. Following the scare, the prefecture quickly set up the “Original Local Food Promotion Conference” that was held at Okinawa Convention Center on Sunday. The conference was held concurrently with the Agriculture and Fisheries Fair on the same premises. The conference promoted Okinawan produced foods and a traditional diet. Prefectural officials are also planning special promotions of local produce in prefecture’s schools, hospitals and hotels. |
