American beef, chicken removed from Okinawa stores

Date Posted: 2004-02-12

American chicken products have joined beef in being pulled from island supermarkets. San-A and Jusco, the two largest supermarket chain operators in the prefecture, say they have removed all poultry imported from the U.S. following the discovery of bird flu in American chicken farms. The Japanese Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Ministry banned the import of chicken from the U.S. after the discovery.

The supermarkets removed American beef from their shelves a month ago following the discovery of one case of “mad cow disease” in the U.S.

Following the scare, the prefecture quickly set up the “Original Local Food Promotion Conference” that was held at Okinawa Convention Center on Sunday. The conference was held concurrently with the Agriculture and Fisheries Fair on the same premises. The conference promoted Okinawan produced foods and a traditional diet. Prefectural officials are also planning special promotions of local produce in prefecture’s schools, hospitals and hotels.
