Baby giraffe born in Okinawa Children’s Land Zoo

Date Posted: 2004-02-12

A giraffe gave birth to a healthy calf in Okinawa Children’s Land zoo, Friday. The new baby giraffe is 180 cm tall and weighs 45 kg. As the mother is already 24 years old, its keepers consider the birth nothing short of a miracle. “If we think in human years our giraffe would be about 100 years old, so we were very surprised that she was able to have a calf,” said Rinshun Kadekari, a spokesman for the zoo. He also said that the baby was the ninth for the giraffe, and that also is unusual. “We take pride at the fact that Okinawa is considered the island of longevity. That seems to be true for both humans and animals alike,” Kadekari said.

“I could not believe when I saw that she was pregnant. I believe that she is the oldest giraffe in Japan to have a baby,” Kadekari thinks. He added that although the baby was a little smaller than average, it is healthy. “It stood up by itself the next day after it was born and started walking around,” Kadekari said. The zoo is currently under renovation and is scheduled to open to public in April.
