Date Posted: 2004-02-12

A 61-year-old bar patron conned his favorite barkeep, convincing her hed been arrested for drunk driving after imbibing at her establishment. Okinawa City Police arrested the man on Saturday, after discovering the man had convinced the 74-year-old bar proprietress that he had been arrested for drunk driving, and needed money to pay the fine.

According to investigators, the man had visited the bar regularly and always left drunk. One day he told the mama-san that he had been arrested the previous night for drunk driving, and that she should pay his Y500,000 fine, as he had gotten intoxicated in her bar.

The next day she went to her bank and asked for a loan. The bank staff became suspicious, as she had never borrowed money from the bank, although she had been a customer for years. When they asked why she needed the money, she told the story the man had told her.

After she left, a bank officer called to police station to verify the mans story, and was subsequently told that no such arrest had happened. The police, however, were very interested in the story, and when they learned that the mama-san had already handed over the money to the man, they arrested him on suspicion of swindling.
