Naha underwater tunnel concert

Date Posted: 2004-02-05

It does not happen every day that there is a concert held in a tunnel, and even less often in a tunnel that is being constructed underwater, but such an event was held Sunday in a tunnel under construction in Naha City.

The tunnel in question will eventually connect Miejo next to the Loisir Hotel to Naha Airport. The tunnel has been under construction since 1996 and is scheduled to be completed in 2009.

Okinawa Prefecture General Bureau, the agency responsible for the tunnel project, organized the concert in hopes of increasing people’s awareness of the project. “Many people don’t know about this project and we hope that the concert will help publicize it,” a General Bureau spokesman said.

Over 200 people attended the concert that featured Okinawan-style music with sanshins and taiko drums. The program also included a talk show, and showing of a video explaining the construction method of the tunnel.

“The audience seemed satisfied with the experience. It was wonderful and very interesting. The echo was especially beautiful,” Naha housewife Naoko Oshiro said. Organizers were also satisfied. “I think we achieved our goal. I think we will organize another concert in the near future,” the General Bureau spokesman said.

Once completed, the tunnel will be 1,100 meters in length with 720 meters of it under water.
