Thirsty customer refuses to leave, fistfights with owner

Date Posted: 2004-02-05

Closing time at an Ginowan City bar didn’t sit well with a U.S. Marine, who took actions in his own hand to keep the bar open. That decision ended up in a fistfight with an Okinawan bar owner who wanted to close his bar as it was very late, and there were no other customers in his bar in Futenma.

The 21-year-old Marine wanted to have more drinks, but the owner refused to serve him. The owner later said that it looked like the Marine had had more than enough, and he told him to go home. “But he insisted that he was the customer, and as he wanted to drink more I should serve him,” the owner told the police.

The pair then moved outside to a parking lot next to the bar, where the argument erupted again. When the Marine landed a few punches on the bar owner’s face, the owner called the police.

Both men were still on the parking lot when the police arrived. The Marine claims he hit the owner after he was attacked first. “The owner started beating me so I had to defend myself,” he reportedly told the police. The owner told the police exactly the opposite story. Ginowan Police are continuing the investigation.
