Kokusai festivities to lure shoppers back downtown

Date Posted: 2002-01-24

Kokusai Street in Naha will be transformed into a pleasant pedestrian mall on Jan. 27 in an experiment to draw shoppers back downtown. Two hundred volunteers will be out in force on Sunday to help the crowds enjoy the day, which was conceived as a result of surveys conducted and organized by various retail associations along the famous shopping street. Various forms of street entertainment are planned to entertain the crowds, and vehicular traffic will be restricted to shuttle busses ferrying shoppers to and from designated destinations. The festivities will run from noon until 6:00 p.m. The day-long event was organized in an attempt to revitalize Kokusai Street, which has lost some of its appeal as more and more shoppers depend on cars to take them to big shopping centers outside the downtown area.
