Bathhouse owner, manager jailed for prostitution

Date Posted: 2004-01-29

An owner of a Naha soapland and his business manager were sentenced to two and one and half year prison terms respectively for organized prostitution. They were also fined Y300,000.each. According to the Naha District Court ruling, the men had arranged last September for taxis to bring tourists from several hotels to their soapland to meet prostitutes.

Owners of a rival soapland fingered the two when they became exceedingly bold in their venture, and a police raid followed. The two were arrested Jan. 23 after police completed their investigation. Soapland is a term for a bathhouse in Japan, where naked girls bathe customers. Most of them are said to engage in prostitution, but the police often look the other way as long as they are discreet and there are no complaints.
